This has a practical consequence for interpretation. A reading imported from elsewhere can be internally coherent and have nothing to do with what was intended, and the coherence makes it feel right. Establishing which tradition, period and community produced a symbol is not academic pedantry; it is the only thing that makes a reading more than invention.
