When does learning actually get stored?
The idea
Memory is stabilised during sleep, so what you retain depends on rest as well as on study.

Material reviewed before sleep is retained better than the same review followed by a late night.
Going deeper
Memory is stabilised after learning, and a substantial part of that process happens during sleep. Study time and sleep time are therefore not competing uses of the same resource in the way they appear to be.
Trading sleep for extra revision takes hours from the process that stores what was already learned, and the tiredness then degrades the encoding of the extra study too. The result can be less retained despite more input. Reviewing material shortly before sleep, rather than displacing sleep to review more, uses the mechanism instead of fighting it.
Where it stops applying
The relationship is well supported in outline and the detail of which sleep stages matter for which learning is still debated. Treat it as a reason to protect sleep, not as a precise protocol.
Why it matters
It makes sleep part of the study plan rather than the thing sacrificed to make room for it.
