The Hermetic texts emerged from the Greco-Egyptian world of late antiquity, blending Greek philosophy with Egyptian religious ideas. That is a real and interesting origin, and it is not the one usually claimed for them.
The as above, so below maxim is routinely presented as ancient Egyptian wisdom transmitted from pharaonic times. The historical record places it in this later syncretic milieu instead.
