Follow-Up Adds Value
What separates a follow-up that reopens a conversation from one that closes it?
The idea
Useful follow-up advances a decision instead of merely checking in.
In the real world
Send a relevant benchmark that answers an open concern.
Going deeper
Every contact spends a small amount of goodwill. A follow-up that asks whether there is any movement spends it and returns nothing, while also asking the recipient to do work — think, recall context, compose a reply — with no reason to.
The alternative is to advance the specific thing that is blocking them. Sending the security documentation, the benchmark, the reference contact, or the answer to the question they raised does the work they would otherwise have to do. It also gives them a reason to reply that is not politeness, which is why one gets answered and the other does not.
Where it stops applying
There is a point where a deal is genuinely dormant and more value-adding follow-up is just noise. A direct question about whether to close the file is more respectful than indefinite helpfulness.
Why it matters
Every contact either moves the decision forward or spends goodwill, and checking in spends without moving.
Try this today
Make your next follow-up contain new evidence.
Test yourself
Two follow-ups land the same morning. One asks whether there has been any movement. One attaches a benchmark answering the security concern raised on the call. Why does only one get a reply?
Show the answer
The second does work the buyer would otherwise have to do, and advances the specific thing that was blocking them. The first asks the buyer for effort and offers nothing in return.
